Paralympics 2024: Suhas LY Sets Sights on Gold Medal After Securing Final Spot
Suhas LY:
India’s quest for medals at the Paris Paralympics has been bolstered by para-badminton star Suhas LY, who has clinched his place in the finals, ensuring at least one more medal for the country. Suhas advanced to the final of the SL4 category by defeating his compatriot Sukant Kadam with scores of 21-17 and 21-12. This achievement not only guarantees him a medal but also marks his historic second consecutive appearance in a Paralympic final.
Suhas LY, currently serving as a district collector, has showcased his exceptional skills on the global stage while also fulfilling his administrative duties. His dual role as a top-performing athlete and a high-ranking official highlights his extraordinary commitment and versatility.
With his place in the final secured, Suhas is assured of a medal. Should he lose in the final, he will receive a silver medal. Sukant Kadam, who was defeated by Suhas in the semifinals, will compete for the bronze medal. This scenario could potentially result in India securing two additional medals, adding to their current tally of five medals in the games. To date, India has won one gold medal—achieved by Avani Lekhara—and four bronze medals by other athletes.
For additional context, Suhas LY is a 2007 batch IAS officer who previously served as District Magistrate in both Gautam Buddh Nagar and Prayagraj. His exemplary performance at the Tokyo Paralympics, where he won a silver medal in the men’s singles SL4 category, has already set a high standard. Currently, he holds the positions of Secretary for Youth Welfare and Director General of the Provincial Armed Constabulary in Uttar Pradesh. Suhas has received numerous accolades for his contributions, including the prestigious Arjuna Award, further underscoring his excellence both on and off the court.
