Beware of Scams This Raksha Bandhan: Don’t Fall for These Fraudulent Messages!

With Raksha Bandhan just around the corner, markets are bustling with festive preparations. Many brothers who can’t be with their sisters are sending Rakhi gifts through parcels. However, this festive season also brings out the scammers. Here’s how they are targeting people and how you can protect yourself.

How Scammers Are Targeting You

Scammers are using Raksha Bandhan to their advantage. They are sending messages pretending to be from India Post, claiming that a parcel cannot be delivered because the address is incomplete or incorrect. The message includes a link asking you to update your address details.

How the Scam Works

  1. Click the Link: When you click on the link in the message, you are asked to update your address.
  2. Phone Hacked or Small Fee Charged: Sometimes, your phone can be hacked when you click the link. Other times, you might be asked to pay a small fee (between ₹25-50) for re-delivery.
  3. Payment Details Compromised: Because the fee is small, people often enter their debit or credit card details to make the payment. This is where the scam happens—your payment information ends up in the scammers’ hands.

How to Avoid Falling for These Scams

  • Be Cautious of Unknown Messages: If you receive a message from an unknown number or email, be wary. Verify the information before taking any action.
  • Avoid Clicking Unknown Links: Don’t click on links from messages that you weren’t expecting. Always go directly to the official website if you need to check anything.
  • Verify with the Company: If you receive a message asking for personal or payment information, contact the customer support of the company or courier service directly. For example, call India Post or any other courier company to confirm if the message is legitimate.
  • Report Cyber Fraud: If you believe you’ve been scammed, report it immediately. You can call the number 1930 or file a complaint on the Cyber Crime portal at cybercrime.gov.in.

By staying alert and following these tips, you can protect yourself from these scams and enjoy a safe and happy Raksha Bandhan!
