The rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has caused a huge stir. On the night of August 14, 2024, after the crime, there was a violent disturbance at the hospital, which led to widespread political debate. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrived at the hospital on August 16, 2024, and spent five hours investigating. Here’s what’s happened so far:
Details of the Case:
- Nationwide Doctors’ Strike: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced that all medical services across the country will be on strike for 24 hours on August 17, 2024. Doctors will stop working from 6 AM on August 17 until 6 AM on August 18. Only emergency services will be available during this time.
- IMA’s Demands: The IMA has put forward several demands. They want new policies to prevent violence against hospitals and better protection for doctors. They are asking for improvements such as more CCTV cameras, additional security staff, and safer working conditions. They also want new national laws to strengthen current state regulations.
- CBI Investigation: The CBI is treating the case as part of a bigger conspiracy. They have a list of 30 to 35 people, including the victim’s friends, who might be connected to the crime. The CBI is also looking into the roles of some hospital guards and police officers. They have brought 13 hospital employees in for questioning.
- Family’s Concerns: The victim’s family believes that more people might be involved in the crime. According to the victim’s father, she left for her shift around 8:10 AM and last spoke to her mother at around 11:15 PM. Her phone rang in the morning but was not answered, and no one sought her help during her shift.
- Political Protests: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee led a protest march on August 16, 2024, demanding justice for the victim. She accused the CPI(M) and BJP of causing the hospital damage and spreading false information. She urged the CBI to solve the case quickly and called for the death penalty for the guilty. Banerjee also criticized the central government for sending teams to Bengal while ignoring similar incidents in BJP-ruled states.
- Political Tensions: There has been a lot of political fighting over the case. BJP West Bengal President and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar was detained by the police during a protest. The police claimed a BJP worker was run over by a vehicle during the demonstration. After his arrest, Majumdar criticized the TMC and demanded the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal, saying that police should be held accountable for the incident.
- Governor’s Comments: West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose has criticized RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, calling it a “hub of scandals.” He mentioned receiving many complaints about the hospital and said the state government has failed to act properly.
- Central Government’s Action: Following the vandalism at the hospital, the central government issued a new directive. The Health Ministry now requires that if there is any violence against healthcare workers, the head of the institution must file a report within six hours of the incident.
- Supreme Court Appeal: On August 15, 2024, two lawyers from the Supreme Court, Ujjwal Gaur and Rohit Pandey, asked Chief Justice DY Chandrachud to take immediate action on the case. They stressed that the Supreme Court should intervene quickly and seriously.
