The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches at multiple locations in Kolkata on Thursday, including the residence of Satya Prakash Ghosh, father of former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh. The searches are part of an ongoing investigation into financial irregularities at the hospital.
Investigation Background
The ED and CBI are investigating allegations of corruption and financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Former principal Sandip Ghosh was arrested in connection with the case. Akhter Ali, a former non-medical deputy superintendent of the hospital, was questioned by the ED on Wednesday regarding alleged nepotism in vendor selection by Ghosh.
Searches and Seizures
The ED searched several suburban locations, including Satya Prakash Ghosh’s residence, and seized documents related to properties suspected to be purchased with proceeds of crime. At least seven properties linked to Sandip Ghosh and his wife, Sangeeta Ghosh, are under investigation.
Allegations and Controversy
Akhter Ali alleged in a letter to the state vigilance commission that Ghosh and others were involved in corrupt practices, including awarding contracts to ineligible bidders. Ali also claimed that the hospital’s bio-medical waste nodal agency had not received the required amount of waste for several months.
Response from Sangeeta Ghosh
Sangeeta Ghosh, who purchased two immovable properties without state government approval, maintained that her husband had done nothing wrong. She was granted post facto approval in 2021.
Ongoing Investigation
The ED is investigating the case from all angles, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days. The agency is working to unravel the motives behind the alleged corruption and financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
